Research context and mission

Biological pretreatment of lignocellulose by white-rot fungi is an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical and physical approaches to enhance enzymatic saccharification. However, inefficient lignin degradation and substantial cellulose consumption during fungal pretreatment can cause low sugar yields. The doctoral research of Nikolett Wittner aims to investigate the effect of metal ions and phenolic mediators on the separate levels (enzyme, fungal growth and substrate) of the complex fungal pretreatment system in order to minimize cellulose consumption and improve lignin degradation during fungal pretreatment of poplar wood.
