Quantum mechanics without wave functions: from Wigner to signed particles

The purpose of the course is twofold:

On the one hand, it aims at endorsing the celebrated Wigner function and, in a broader perspective, quantum mechanical distribution functions as sound vehicles to study quantum transport of charged particles propagating through solids and solid-state devices, such as nano-scaled transistors and interconnects. As such, the Wigner function approach provides a workable alternative to the popular Non-Equilibrium Green Function techniques when it comes to derive quantum mechanical transport characteristics.
On the other hand, the course intends to demonstrate that the application area of the Wigner function and its extension to a description based on signed particles is much wider than that of a transport simulation tool.
As a matter of fact, it turns out that its formalism offers an alternative description of quantum mechanics when combined with new insights in the Monte
Carlo method and, as a consequence, may be beneficial to various research domains, including density functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium many-body
In this light, it goes without saying that the course is meant to a broad audience of physicists, chemists and engineers and, as such, does not intend to focus on very specialized items and technical details.
