We will discuss how one can make qualitative statements about the energy spectrum by studying the behaviour of the wave function in a general potential. The key quantity that we study is the local kinetic energy that appears in the Schrödinger equation. After a short introduction we will go through several examples starting from a simple potential well and ending at a relation between effective mass and band character. We use one-dimensional systems for simplicity although systems with cylinder or spherical symmetry in respectively two and three dimensions are equivalent. During the talk I will also ask some questions to the audience.
