Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in micromagnetism

Abstract: In bulk materials, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is caused by a lack of inversion symmetry in the crystal structure. However, in thin films, DMI can also be induced by symmetry breaking at interfaces. The chiral character of the DMI leads to chiral spin states - skyrmions, skyrmion lattices, cycloids and helices - in ferromagnets. During the talk, we will look at the basic concepts of the micromagnetic framework and the implementation of the interfacially induced DMI. Here, we will focus on thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. With these basic concepts of micromagnetism we can explore the chiral spin states and reveal the phase diagram of the magnetization in large films and mesoscopic square platelets.
