Dirac physics: from graphene to topological phases (I)

Three lectures (planned for Monday Feb 6, Wednesday Feb 8 and Friday Feb 10), will cover these topics:

Graphene
- derivation of low-energy description – Dirac equation(s)
- fermion doubling and the role of symmetries
- the role of interactions
- finite systems and Klein paradox
- excitonic physics in finite systems

Topological phases
- topological concepts: graphene and BKT transition
- IQHE (integer quantum Hall effect) – topological insulator and non-trivial Chern invariant of lowest Landau level
- Haldane model (topological insulator) – its Dirac description and non-trivial Chern number
