Korte beschrijving: This practical course aims to give participants the skills to design, implement, and analyse individual-based models with applications in epidemiology.

Individual-based models (IBMs), also frequently referred to as agent-based models, are a relatively new class of models that can be used to gain insight into the population dynamics of complex systems that emerge from the characteristics and interactions of individuals in the population.

The target audiance are Phd-students, postdocs and health science professionals whose work potentially involves the design and/or use of IBMs in epidemiology

This course aims to give participants the skills to design, implement, and analyse IBMs with practical applications in epidemiology. The emphasis of the course will be on the process of designing, testing and analysing IBMs to address complex questions in epidemiology and not on the technical aspects of writing computer programs.

Throughout the course there will be a strong emphasis on the practical implementation of IBMs with R and NetLogo. The course will be in English and will use three “class-room examples”  to illustrate the theoretical concepts and methods. By the end of the week, participants will be able to develop in small teams their own (extensions of an) IBM, and will present their work on the final day of the course.
