Korte beschrijving: Lecture by Prof Domenico Fabio Savo (Sapienza University of Rome)

Information systems of medium and large organizations are typically constituted by several, independent, and distributed data sources, and this poses great difficulties with respect to the goal of accessing data in a unified and coherent way. Ontology-Based Data Access (OBDA) can provide the principles and the techniques for addressing this challenge. In OBDA, the usual global schema of traditional data integration systems is replaced by an ontology, i.e., a conceptual representation of the application domain, expressed through a logic-based language. Suitable mappings are used to link the concepts in the ontology to the data at the sources so that queries expressed over the ontology can be translated into queries over the data sources. In this talk, we provide an introduction to Ontology-based Data Access and overview main ideas and techniques developed in the last years for accessing the data layer of an information system by means of an ontology.

About the speaker

Domenico Fabio Savo is a research associate at DIAG, the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering Antonio Ruberti at Sapienza University of Rome, and Co-Founder and leading member of the OBDA Systems's research and project development team. He received his Ph.D. in 2013 from Sapienza University of Rome, and was a fixed-term assistant professor at Sapienza University of Rome from March 2014 to February 2017. His research interests focus on the application of semantic technologies for information and data management. He studies the application of reasoning techniques over ontologies for data management: Ontology-based Data Management (OBDM); Knowledge Representation, Ontology Engineering, and Semantic Web. He has participated in several projects in collaboration with private companies and public administration bureaus with the aim of applying semantic technologies to real-world scenarios. In 2017 he (co)founded the OBDA Systems, an innovation start-up of Sapienza University, which proposes state-of-the-art solutions based on the most recent breakthroughs in the field of semantic technologies. Domenico Fabio Savo regularly publishes the results of his research and serves as a reviewer for conference and journals in the areas of his interest.
