After a brief examination of the policies and the national guidelines of asylum reception system in Italy, this presentation investigates the role of social workers in the Italian reception system from a pedagogical perspective. In particular, the presentation highlights the gap between institutional guidelines concerning the role of social workers and the practices on the ground. Drawing from 19 interviews and extended ethnographic observations in a SPRAR project (Protection System for Asylum seekers and Refugees) in Emilia Romagna, this work explores the complexity of the expectations towards, and aspirations of social workers facing "continuous emergency". Through this case study, it is argued that crucial pedagogical aspects of social workers’ role end up to be neglected in a system like the Italian one, organised around the concept of “crisis”. Based on empirical understanding of the everyday challenges of this professional practice, this paper shows the contradictions of this system through the perspectives of social workers
