The discovery of graphene, the first two-dimensional (2D) atomically thin material, has attracted immense attention from scientists. This prompted investigations of many other 2D materials having very diverse electronic properties. However, inherent ferromagnetism was not one of them. Theoretically, the long-range magnetic order is restricted in two-dimensions at finite temperature, however, it was recently shown that the magnetic anisotropy removes that restriction and enables the occurrence of two-dimensional ferromagnetism.  In this talk, the basic magnetic interactions and effects in the condensed matter will be given as an introduction and then magnetic phenomena in two-dimensional materials will be reviewed from the early attempts of inducing ferromagnetism to the recent realization of the inherently magnetic monolayer, CrI3.
