Crossroads: Why the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Could Become Obsolete

Date: 15 December 2017

Introduction: Prof Tom Sauer on the demise of the Nonproliferation Treaty.

According to Professor Tom Sauer, the nuclear-weapon states are failing to uphold the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). This miscalculation may be the unravelling of the nuclear nonproliferation regime. Most nonnuclear-weapon states believe that they have not been treated fairly under the NPT, which might result in the distancing of these states from the treaty and a possible rise in the amount of nuclear-weapon states. The next NPT Review Conference will be a critical junction to halt this proces.
