New patent granted for cylindrical parameterization

A patent, EP2441054 (B1), was granted to the University of Antwerp, for an invention of the researchers of iMinds/VisionLab.
The invention enables to param eterize and unfold tubular shaped objects with minimal distortion.
This can for example be applied in virtual colonoscopy, where it has significant benefits over the traditional center line tracking and other methods because it guarantees complete visibility of the colon wall with minimal flattening distortion, even in the presence of severe folding.
This in turn significantly improves the efficiency of interpretation of the images and reduces the time to interpret. The technology is not limited to colonoscopy but can be applied to any tubular or any other surface shape.
