### 1. Prerequisites *

At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:

an active knowledge of

- competences corresponding the final attainment level of secondary school

an active knowledge of

- Dutch

- general knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet

### 2. Learning outcomes *

- The student knows how to prepare and give a presentation.
- The student can critically evaluate reference material.
- The student is able to work in a team.
- The student knows how to translate a practical problem into a mathematical model, and to communicate the results to a broad audience.
- The student is able to write a text according to scientific guidelines.

### 3. Course contents *

For many courses (often mainly focusing on knowledge transfer), the student is required to write a text and/or give a presentation. Also later, in your professional life, chances are that this will be an important part of your job. For that reason, we will focus on the following skills in this course:

- How do you prepare a lecture, and what should you focus on when you are giving one (both for an expert panel or a broader audience)
- How do you find the required information, both on the web as well as in books and journals? How do you critically evaluate these sources, and how do you correctly refer to them?
- How do you translate a practical problem (e.g. coming from another branch of science) into a purely mathematical question? How do you approach this mathematical problem?
- When you are asked to write a scientific text, where should you focus on?

#### 7.1 Required reading

For this course, there will be no course notes in the classical sense. However, for each of the aforementioned skills, we will provide guidelines (writing tips, presentations, ...) which will be available through Blackboard.
