3. Course contents *

The course's contents consists of the following:

  • Statistical and graphical processing of data in support of laboratory experiments (e.g. Microsoft Excel). Structuring of data, data transformation, selection and statistical analysis using built-in functions. Graphical rendering of data (box-plots, scatter plots, trend-lines, ...).
  • Basic principles of programming using a scripting language in order to add additional functionality to the statistical software package (functions, simple expressions, control flow structures). (Biology)
  • Basic principles of databases and querying of databases (queries with singular and multiple criteria, join operations, ...). (Bio-Engineering Sciences).

The course consists of a number of lectures that deal with the aforementioned course matter and in which important practical issues in the use of the software packages will be raised. These lectures are supplemented by hands-on practical sessions in the lab in which students develop the necessary skills to effectively use these software packages.
