3. Course contents *

The course provides the basic knowledge on environmental Chemistry, sustainability and chemical safety. Specific attention is given on developing the correct attitude for a chemist with respect to environmental concern, sustainability and safety.

Partim Environmental Chemistry:

Basic principles of environmental chemistry are discussed. Focus is put on inorganic pollutants such as SOx, NOx, ozon and particulate matter
A short introduction on water pollutants is given.
Attention is given to the impact of society

There is specific attention for the mechanisms behind pollution but also with respect to meaningful analysis and the nexus with research to enable solutions for the current societal and environmental challenges.

Partim Chemical safety:

-  Principles and ethics of chemical safety
- Chemical and physical risks and hazards in function of the environment the chemicals are used in
- Safety information sources and their interpretation and utilization (including the physical properties)
-  Preventing and minimizing risks
- Risk analysis and incident controle

Partim sustainability:

The various principles of sustainability are discussed. Also here, the impact of the environment on sustainability and its impact is emphasised. Examples from different sectors of chemistry and sector federation such as Essenscia and CEFIC will be discussed.
