3. Course contents *

The course starts with a concise recapitulation of some basic chemical notions. Then the most important families of organic compounds (hydrocarbons, organic halogen compounds, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, amines, etc.) are reviewed. Special attention is given to the physical properties of these compounds especially in aqeuous medium (cfr. the living cell). Also the most fundamental reaction mechanisms, which can help to understand the chemical properties of these compounds, as well as biomolecules, are discussed. The three-dimentional structure of (bio)molecules is dicussed in a separate chapter on stereochemistry. To keep the interest of the students alive examples with a biological background are given as much as possible, e.g. thiols and the smell of the striped skunk.
