The course provides a systematic overview of the principal groups of parasitic protista, animals and (to a lesser extent) plants and fungi. Microbial parasites are dealt with only very briefly. Much attention is paid to the great formal variety, the divergent life cycles and transmission patterns, as well as to the interaction between hosts, vectors and parasites. The course includes a seminar in which the great formal variety of parasites is illustrated Students are taught how to recognise different types of parasites and their life stages. They are required to make a group assignment (4 students per group) whereby each group analyses and discusses a parasite and its cycle.
