3. Course contents *

This course will provide the student with insight in the basic principles of the synthesis and the characterization of polymers. It forms the basics for the development of elementary skills during advanced courses as for example taught in 2nd Ma which enable to gain insight in polymer material properties and more complex polymer chemistry.

Introduction and definitions: Polymer classification, nomenclature;

Polymer synthesis: General principles;

Radical vinyl polymerizations;

Anionic and cationic vinyl polymerizations;

Coordination polymerizations;

Ring opening polymerizations;

Stepwise polymerizations;

Copolymers and copolymerization curves;

Polymerization techniques: mass polymerization, solution polymerization, pearl polymerization, emulsion polymerization;

Microstructure of polymers;

Reactions with polymers;

Properties and characterization of polymers: polymers in solution;

Basic techniques for molecular weight determination;

Introduction to phase transitions
