3. Course contents *

In this course, the principles and technological aspects of process equipment are dealt with. During the exercises, the theory is applied and practical (process designing) problems are solved

The following subjects are treated:

  1. Transport of fluids. This chapter focusses on the (continuous) transport of fluids through ducts and pipes. Liquids and gasses are discussed, but also bulk goods since the latter ones are often pneumatically transported, like liquids. Aspects that are discussed are calculation of energy losses in flow systems, analysis of duct and pipe systems, pumps and pump types, gas transport by means of fans and compressors, transport of bulk goods by means of pneumatic systems.
  2. Rotating electrical machines. Electrical engines are important power sources in industrial processes. In a reversed Electricprocess, they can be used as electrical generators. These rotating electrical machines are the focuss of this chapter. They cannot be treated without clarifying some fundamental concepts of electricity (including alternating current and multiple phase electrical circuits).
  3. Heat engines. In this chapter the fundamentals of the spark ignition engines and the compression ignition engines (diesel engines) are explained, the fuel types, emissions and the turbo principles. Some technological aspects are discussed and the deviations from idealised thermodynamic behavior are explained.

  4. Machine parts for power transmission.  In this chapter the mechanical machine elements used in power transmission are discussed: belt and chain transmission, gearing wheels, gears and brakes.
