3. Course contents *

The purpose of this course is to discuss the architecture and functioning of a number of contemporary telecommunications systems . Use is made of the ISO reference model previously studied in the Computer Networks course (1st Bachelor). More specifically, the following telecommunications systems are dealt with:

- a historical overview from telephony networks to integrated digital  networks,

- IP networks (Internet) with emphasis on Quality of Service support,

- wired access networks (APON, ADSL/VDSL, PON),

- wireless mobile networks (GSM, GPRS, UMTS),

- Wireless LAN .

Besides the general principles applied in the design and application of such networks, the course also considers the architectural aspects.

The practical part of this course is organized in collaboration with the course "Gedistribueerde Systemen". The total assignment consists of three parts" a "Telecommunicatiesystemen" related part, a "Gedistribueerde Systemen" related part and a part that realizes the integration of both.

In the part related to "Telecommunicatiesystemen" an assignment is given concerning the implementation of a protocol in the CLICK environment, starting from an IETF specification. Afterwards this implemetation needs be integrated with the part related to the course "Gedistribueerde Systemen"
