3. Course contents *

In the first part of the course, the Laws of Thermodynamics, which the student has previously encountered during the 1 Ba Chem year, are rehearsed and the insight is deepened, especially concerning the Second and Third Laws.  Straightforward applications of the First Law (laws of Hess, of Kirchoff, and the concept of formation reactions) are discussed.  In the partim Thermochemistry the use of Gibbs energy and chemical potentials in the description of physical and chemical equilibria is treated to some depth.  In the final chapter the basic concepts of statistical mechanics, including the Boltzmann equation and the calculation of the main state functions of systems in the gas phase, are introduced.
