3. Course contents *

The Biochemistry course, includes mostly general cell metabolism, i.e. primary metabolic routes, and energy metabolism, explained at the level of the macromolecules and thermodynamics involved. Attention is given to regulation of these pathways, and their integration into overall metabolism.

In the first chapters, the structure and chemical and physical properties of macromolecules is refreshed. Particular attention is given to the three dimensional structure, and structure-function relationship of proteins. For example, the function and mechanism of enzymes is extensively discussed. As eukaryotic cell metabolism is tightly coupled to compartmentation into organelles, details on membrane structure and properties, and transmembrane transport, are presented. Cellular signal transduction is introduced with a general overview of mechanisms, and detailed examples (e.g. perception of light and odorants).

The second major part of this course, includes all essential primary, anabolic and catabolic processes (e.g. glycolysis, fermentation, ...), in great detail, also including ATP synthesis. 

The course also includes a set of obligatory laboratory session. In these lab courses, limited experiments are performed, illustrating the course, and providing training in basic laboratory skill. Topics that are illustrated in the lab are, 

Technical skills that are trained include, pH measurement, spectrophotometry, pipetting, solution making, experiment planning, chromatography, data processing and reporting.
