3. Course contents *

Optical techniques and lasers have become an essential part of modern technology and scientific research.  First, the general principles, technical aspects and possibilities of the most widely used techniques for the generation, manipulation, selection (polarisation, wavelength), and detection of light are explained. Subsequently, the operation of lasers is treated in more detail: How can one control the emitted wavelength, how can short or high energy pulses be generated -- in other words, which types of lasers are suitable for which purpose ?  The most frequently used optical spectroscopic techniques are discussed, once more from a technical/practical perspective.
