Surface chemistry and catalysis are an increasingly important area in physical chemistry because they are the fundaments of nanotechnology. In this course the basic principles of surface chemistry are covered, but also the way to analyse a surface and a guideline to understand the dynamics and thermodynamics of surface reactions.

Heterogeneous catalysis is covered in depth and a few examples from the hall of fame of chemistry are studied. The basis principles are treated by means of surface geometrical and electronical properties. Reactivity of surfaces is studied in adsorption, desorption and reactions. The industrial chemistry hall of fame passes by in the Fischer-Tropsch, Haber-Bosch and three way catalyst. New concepts as epitaxy, self assembled monolayers and lithography are also explained.
