The general aim is to increase criticial thinking about how religions and worldviews influence culture and cultural expressions, and vice versa how culture can influence religions and worldviews. Attention will be paid to both a historical and a more current component. The focus will be primarily on the interaction of culture with Christianity, Islam and some Eastern philosophies.
Subsequently, attention will be paid to the evolutions of the religious landscape on a global level as well as on the level of Western Europe (secularization, depillarisation and diversity). Also the religious history of Belgium and the way in which religion is present in the social culture of Belgium will be examined.
Finally, the students learn to think about the place of religion and worldviews in a modern culture, with special attention to the relationship between faith and science and the place of religion and diversity in a secular society.
