3. Course contents *

In this introductory course “organic chemistry” the different classes of organic compounds and their functional groups (nomenclature included) will be discussed systematically. Important basic concepts like isomers, rotamers, conformers, tautomers, resonance and aromaticity will be explained by means of examples and exercises. Moreover a foundation for the 2nd bachelor course “organic reactions” will be laid by introducing the terms “nucleophile” and “electrophile”. Because of the big importance of organic molecules in our society, various illustrations from pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry will be given. In close connection with this, within the framework of sustainable development, some examples of organic pollutants in our environment will be quoted.
