Basis insights into speaking, listening, reading and writing

The students reflect on the basic principles of a good presentation and dialogue (e.g., active listening, body language). Next, the focus is on the features of academic texts, the reading process and factors that reduce the readability of a text. Moreover, attention is paid to a clear, appealing and correct sentence structure, to the coherence of paragraphs and to argumentation.

The students become familiar with a number of Dutch dictionaries and resources for language advice. They expand their vocabulary, paying special attention to the register of the words. Moreover, they learn to recognize Belgian Dutch, Netherlandic Dutch and Surinamese Dutch words and expressions in authentic texts (e.g., recent news paper articles). Finally, they improve their knowledge of Dutch expressions and proverbs.
