At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:
an active knowledge of
The language of teaching of most classes is Dutch with Dutch slides; part of the classes are given in English with English slides. The teacher of the English part understands Dutch (so students can ask questions in Dutch if needed) and he can also switch to Dutch when needed. The printed course text is completely in Dutch.
a passive knowledge of
A number of words and terms in some figures and tables are in English. But all figures and tables in the syllabus (or course materials) are accompanied by a complete legend in Dutch.
specific prerequisites for this course
The student has the knowledge of several basic chemical principles, a number of physical laws and mathematical concepts. The student knows and understands the laws of thermodynamics, the essentials of carbon chemistry (organic chemistry), principles of inorganic chemistry (oxidation and reduction, pH acidity, etc....). The student knows what are integrals and differentials. The student also knows the basic background of plant and animal sciences.
