3. Course contents *

The course investigates the syntactic system of the English simple and complex sentence and offers a number of tools necessary to deal with their analysis.

Building on the study of individual constituents in the English sentence (the topic of the first-year BA course on English grammar), we describe the functional relations between these constituents. Starting from the structure of simple sentences, we concentrate on the verb and its functional relations in different types of complementation pattern. We also discuss noun and adjective complementation.

All of this is done on the basis of the proposals worked out by Noel Burton-Roberts in his book Analysing Sentences: An Introduction to English Syntax.
