3. Course contents *

The chemical structure of the various construction materials is discussed in relation to their typical behavior (eg plastic behavior in metals and the viscoelastic behavior of plastics). The various material properties (mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical and physical) are discussed in relation to material selection for product design.
Introduction to the possibilities and limitations of some simple production and processing techniques

Designing simple products. Throughout the design, the student learns to think in terms of the possibilities and limitations of a specific material in combination with a pre-defined production technique. Aspects such as creativity, design, desired finish, durability, manufacturability and reliability are discussed.
