3. Course contents *

The enzyme characteristics are discussed, as well as the effect of enzyme-, substrate-, inhibitor and activator concentration on kinetics. Mechanisms contributing to the raise of reaction speed by enzymes are studied using examples. Attention is given to the structure of the active center and substrate binding. De regulation of enzymatic activity by allostery, cooperativity and covalent modifications are as well studied.

Besides the basic elements of enzymology, an introduction in bio-energetics is given: how is the energy in a cell efficiently transported? An overview of oxidative breakdown of carbohydrates and light and dark reactions of photosynthesis is given.

The effect of hormones, growth factors, transcription factors and receptors (signal transduction cascades) on metabolism and on the discussed enzymes will be discussed.
