3. Course contents *

The overall aim of the course is to understand why and how biomolecules adapt a specific structure that allows them to fulfill a (usually) very specific function.
In a first part, we will discuss the energetic forces which attract biomolecules and keep them together, but which also serve for the biomolecules flexibility and dynamics.
In the three next chapters, the structures of respectively the nucleic acids, proteins and carbohydrates will be dicussed, starting from their 'building blocks' and followed by their organisation in primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures.
Finally, although not called biopolymers sensu structu, we will also discuss the lipids because of their modular assembly and their importance in cellular processes.
