### 1. Prerequisites *

an active knowledge of

- Dutch

- English

- general knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet

### 2. Learning outcomes *

- The students should be able to: perform quality control on biomedical data
- The students should be able to:choose the appropriate statistical test for a given study design by means of a Statistics Decision Tree ( http://www.ua.ac.be/download.aspx?c=floris.wuyts&n=47447&ct=47515&e=86016 )
- The students should be able to: perform with SPSS (statistical software) statistical tests
- The students should be able to: interpret the outcome of a statistical analysis (generated with SPSS)
- Attitude: punctuality, accuracy, collegiality, communicative

### 3. Course contents *

Quality control of data, construction of histograms and box plots to visualize data.

Parametric test: Student t-test (paired and unpaired), one and two way ANOVA, , post hoc testing, single and multiple linear regression, correlation

Non - parametric tests: Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal Wallis, Chi square.

By means of the Statistics Decision Tree, the student is guided when to use a specific test for a specific situation.

Students receive classes in which the professor demonstrates the "how and why", but most of the time is dedicated to practical sessions in which students have to perform individually the requested tests on computers, using SPSS.
