3. Course contents *

This course offers an introductory survey of the political, social and cultural history of Antiquity, ranging from prehistory (ca. 10.000 BC) until late Antiquity (ca. 650 AD). Though the emphasis of the course is on Greco-Roman culture, attention will be paid to other cultures as well: Egypt, Ancient Near East, Persia, Judaism, Celts, Early Christianity. Periods that are traditionally somewhat overlooked – such as Hellenism and late Antiquity – will also be highlighted

Though the survey is chronological, some items will be treated thematically (mainly subjects from socio-cultural history, such as family history or the history of sexuality).
