3. Course contents *

A historical overview of the trends in industrial design from 1850 to the present, with attention to the relationship between society, culture, technology and design, and a critical approach to historiography. The tutorials and design studio focus on the analysis of the historical and semantic context. Here the 'context' regarding shape is clearly brought to the attention. Study of material and shape properties lead to a creative range of design specifications. A synthesis of this source material can be the basis for a vision about a product yet to be developed. This course is a continuation of 'form and aesthetics'. All skills gained from previous exercises (sketch capacity, styling, image-thinking and synthesis) are brought together in a delicate balance.
