Part 1: Chemistry
This course starts off with the basic chemical principles and the fundamental chemical laws. We will discuss the atom, the electronic structure of the atom and the periodicity of atomic and chemical properties.
The different chemical bonds are treated (ionic bond, covalent bond, a polar covalent bond and metal bond).
Chemical reactions in solution are discussed.
Part 2: Material Science
This course gives an introduction to material science which is based on the laws of chemistry and physics.
The first chapters discuss the atomic arrangements (crystal structure and defects) of metallic and ceramic materials as well as the molecular structure specific for polymers.
Afterwards, the chemical, physical and in particular the mechanical properties of the different types of materials are explained based on the knowledge of the structure characteristics. Caluculations will be made.
In preparation for the discussion of the polymers and polymer matrix composites, an introduction is given to organic chemistry.
The final chapters treat a selection of polymers, metals and ceramic materials as well as their most important properties and processing techniques. Likewise, the polymer matrix composites are discussed, which combine several types of materials because of complementary properties
