3. Course contents *

The students will grow a set of several micro-organisms and characterise these organisms using selective plates, Gram-staining and microscopic techniques.

In a second assignment students use genotyping, sequencing and database searches to identify an unknown bacteria. They will carry out DNA-isolation, restriction-enzyme digests, agarose-electrophoresis, DNA-amplification using the polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of DNA.

In a third assignment an eukaryote protein is expressed in vitro using a bacterial system. Following techniques will be used: expression cloning, purification of proteins by precipitation, chromatographic separations, enzyme- and protein tests and gel-electrophoresis.
