3. Course contents *

  • The setting up and application of the equation of state for ideal gasses and ideal gass mixtures.
  • The setting up and application of the equation of state for real fluids.
  • First law of thermodynamics for closed systems: setting up formulas for heat and work with state changes (isobar, isotherm, isochoric, adiabatic, isentropic) in a closed system.
  • Concepts as internal energy, enthalpy and entropy.
  • First law of thermodynamics for stationary open systems: calculating the changed heat in heat exchangers and supplied technical work on pumps, compressors and turbines by means of enthalpy.
  • Study of some common cyclic processes: the gas turbine; the cooling cycle; the basic Rankine cycle for a thermal power plant.
  • Second law of thermodynamics and enthropy.
  • Isentropic efficienty of compressors and steam turbines.

During the exercises, the formulas will be applied to practical situations. Their results have to be interpreted and evaluated critically.
