3. Course contents *

Context:

Knowledge and skills in the area of pharmaceutical analysis are gradually built up. Firstly the basic principles and basic techniques are being taught during the lectures and applied during the practical sessions in the second Bachelor year (Pharmaceutical Analysis I&II). In Pharmaceutical Analysis III these principles are applied in the quality control of a drug according to the European Pharmacopoeia. The pharmacist working in a public pharmacy as well as and industrial pharmacist will come into contact with this matter during purchasing (certificate of analysis), batch release and regulatroy affairs and commercial aspects of a bulk product or a drug product. The pracitcal application and the importance of the content in the professional life is ilustrated by a presentation of the 'Algemene Farmaceutische Bond (APB), more specifically the Service of Drugresearch (Dienst Geneesmiddelenonderzoek).

Theory

The European pharmacopoeia forms the basis of the theoretical part of this course. The introductory chapters of this pharmacopoeia, i.e. apparatus, identification methods and purity tests, techniques and methods of analysis, will be dealt with. This course will include the techniques and methods used for the analysis of pure products or relatively simple mixtures that do not need extensive sample preparation. The different possible applications of each technique or specific methodology will be demonstrated using selected monographs. Specific identification and test methods and methods of analysis of selected pharmaceutical excipients and drugs will be studied in more detail.

Practical course
Different pharmaceutical bulk products and simple pharmaceutical preparations are being tested for their quality according to the guidelines of the European Pharmacopoeia. Which technique or specific methodology is applied in which practical course test can be found in the schedule in the introduction of the syllabus.
