3. Course contents *

In the first part of the course, attention will be focussed on the formal aspects: image codes, perspective, colour, the use of optical instruments, photography and modern image technology.

The second part of the course will concentrate on the question of historical interpretation, by exploring various themes: portraits, city views, journalistic photography, print series (Hogenberg, Linnig).  A number of separate themes, such as still life work or the imagery of crowds, will also be investigated. A recurring theme in the second part of the course will be the important role played by different series of images.  The lectures will end with an analysis of historical film material.

A number of subsidiary aspects, such as the digitalisation and storage of visual images, will be discussed in special themed lectures or lectures by guest speakers.
