3. Course contents *

The course ‘History of the Low Countries’ wants to give a chronological overview of the history of a specific and important region in Europe. The term ‘Low Countries’ is used in its broadest geographical definition and the course deals with the period from the fourteenth century until the early decades of the 19th century. The core provinces of the Netherlands – Flanders, Brabant and Holland-Zeeland – get most attention, because their role was decisive in the history of the Low Countries. Attention is paid to the numerous parallel developments that characterized North and South, but also to the separate ways they followed from the end of the 16th century onwards. This interplay between unity and variety constitutes the main theme of this course.
