3. Course contents *

In this elective course, we investigate the origin and current position of 'world literature' in Western society on the basis of specific questions and cases. In addition to the primary and secondary texts (the actual literature and the literature on it) that everyone reads and discusses, each student elaborates at least two cases individually (one old and one more recent text from the world literature) in order to be able to contribute to the critical discussions during the contact hours. Around each individual case, each student develops his own portfolio that states what exactly has been read (which texts or text fragments, which secondary literature). At the final oral exam that portfolio will be discussed but questions will be asked about the basic knowledge about world literature and with regard to the more theoretical discussions. Attendance at the seminars is necessary for the success of this set-up. Permanent evaluation based on the preparation and active participation in the seminars is therefore an essential part of the final assessment. More explanation about this is given during the first lecture.

Note: if the corona measures require contact-free education, this will lead to essential changes; the tutorials are then replaced by interactive sessions with Blackboard Collaborate.
