3. Course contents *

Pharmaceutical Analysis II is linked to Pharmaceutical Analysis I, and focuses on aspects of instrumental analysis. This course can be divided in three big parts:

1) Quantification in analytical methods
2) Optical methods
3) Chromatographic methods

The theoretical part gives detailed information on the instrumental techniques and consists of the following chapters:

1) The different methods to perform quantitative analysis are described with emphasis on calibration curves, standard addition methods, and internal standard. This chapter is important to perform robust and high-quality work during the practical work.

2) In first instance, the molecular spectrometry is discussed, especially UV-VIS, UV-fluorimetry, and infrared absorption spectrophotometry. Next, atomic absorption and atomic emission are described.  For all these techniques, basic principles and instrumentation are discussed.

3) Instrumental separation methods are essential in the analysis of complex samples. A first chapter deals with basic principles of separations between two phases in a discrete and continuous system. Next, the two most applied chromatographic separation methods will be discussed: gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC), Principles, methodological parameters and instrumentation are described. Afterwards, a set of separation methods are discussed that rely on the chromatographic principles: affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, ion chromatography, thin layer chromatography. The last chapter concerns a special technique: capillary electrophoresis.

The practical work brings the theoretical lessons into practice on situations that are relevant in Pharmaceutical Analysis.
