3. Course contents *

This course makes the students acquainted with the central categories of the medieval worldview. It is organized according to the so-called 'great chain of being', the hierarchical worldview that deeply defines medieval cultural production. Themes treated are: God, angels and demons, kosmos, nature, the soul, the body, community, history, language, image. The geographical focus is Europe. The chronological focus is 1000-1300. Written en visual sources of the Low Countries are given special attention.

The course is taught in Dutch, but special arrangements can  be made for English or French speaking students.
