3. Course contents *

The course consists of two parts. In Part I the students are made acquainted with the central categories of the medieval worldview (docent: Veerle Fraeters). It is organized according to the so-called 'great chain of being', the hierarchical worldview that deeply defines medieval cultural production. After an introduction the following themes are treated : (a) God, angels and demons, (2) cosmos and earth, (3) time and history, (4) body and soul, (5) word and image. The chronological focus is 1000-1400.  Narrative and visual sources of the Low Countries are given special attention, with  the multiple genre of the medieval encyclopedia being the prime source type.
Part II consists of a case study. 2019-20: Female Visionaries: from inner seeing to public voice (docent Veerle Fraeters).
