3. Course contents *

A historical overview of the canonical artistic developments in Western Europe between ca. 1800 and 1900, with a focus on the relation between tradition and modernism. Using concrete examples from architecture, design, sculpture, painting and graphic art, the student is presented with a history and understanding of the development of avant garde art. Art movements like Neo-classicism, Romanticism, Historicism, Academic art, Realism, Impressionism, Post-impressionism, Symbolism and Art Noveau, are being dealt with in detail.
