The course deals with the fundamental aspects of chemistry insofar that they are relevant to or preparatory for the rest of the educational program, in particular the courses which deal with the more fundamental-scientific aspects of biomedical sciences. The topics are atoms, molecules and ions, stoichiometry, ionic and covalent bonds (molecular structure), gases, liquids, solids, phase transitions, solutions, kinetics and thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium and reactions in aquaeous solution (acids and bases, electrochemistry).
In the associated practical a number of these concepts are illustrated in an experiment, in addition to teaching a number of basic laboratory skills. The practical entails (1) correctly making solutions, (2) the analysis of an antacid using an acid-base titration, (3) the potentiometric titration of an aminoacid, and (4) setting up a serial dilution. Of each of these a written report is submitted.
