Sociology of social space and time (Dirk Geldof)
How does space acquires a social meaning and why is space a social construction? How does time acquires a social meaning and why is time as well a social construction? In this course we explore from a sociological perspective the construction and social interpretation of space and time. How do different groups perceive space and time in different ways and what are the implications for the use of space? We analyze contemporary changes in the way we deal with space and time and their interaction. We explore the acceleration of our society and increasing time pressure, as well as counter-reactions arguing for slowness and silence. Finally we will reflect how the design of public and private space can offer contexts place for rituals, contemplation or quality time.
