3. Course contents *

In addition to the general concepts such as hybridisation, inductive and mesomeric properties, inter- as well as intramolecular interactions, the properties of the primary classes of organic compounds will be discussed (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carbonic acids, esters ...). Particular attention will be paid to the relationships between structure and chemical and fysical properties (acid/base strength, solubility, (a) polarity, reactivity, boiling point, melting point, ...) The 3D-structure of organic compounds will be discussed (e.g. hybridisation) with particular attention to chiral compounds. Throughout the course,links will be made specific molecules (fatty acids, fats, saccharides, amino acids and proteins, nucleosides, DNA and RNA as well as steroids), covered in other courses (biomolecules, biochemistry, ...).
