A historical overview of the canonical artistic developments in Western Europe during the first half of the 20th century, with a special focus on the relation between tradition, modernism and avant garde. The breakthrough and crisis of the avant garde art are discussed, using cases from the fields of architecture, design, sculpture, painting and new media. Art movements like Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, Constructivism and Neue Sachlichkeit, their most important representative artists and their works, are reviewed.
