3. The economic and cultural identity of the region in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.

4. The influence of liberalism and nationalism.

5. World War I and World War II.

6. The communist regimes of Central Europe and the Balkans.

7. The fall of communism and the return to Europe.
